Do you have a “Chief Encourager?” If not, you need one. In my life, there’s one person who is my chief encourager.
This person is not only positive, but personable. They naturally look for the good in others. That’s why they’re also a chief encourager to many more than just me.
I’ve never asked them to fill this role, yet they go out of their way to praise, compliment, encourage, and pray for me. They are quick to ask how I’m doing and notice small things about my life that others might miss.
This person asks for nothing in return, but is simply rewarded by the joy they receive from being a blessing. I’ve learned so much from them about how to become a better encourager to others myself.
This person is my daughter, Faith.
Everyone has (or needs) a chief encourager. Here are a couple of key takeaways I’ve learned from Faith that can help you become someone else’s chief encourager.
1. Make what’s big to them, big to you.
People love talking to Faith because she always makes them feel valued and prioritized.
For example, she often goes out of her way to ask how I’m doing, notice when I’m wearing a new outfit, or give a compliment on a message I’ve preached.
She shows interest in the things that matter to others, even though she’s probably not interested in some of those things at all.
She simply knows the things that are important to others, and chooses to make them important to her—just like Jesus (Philippians 2:5-6).
2. Rejoice with them, and weep with them. (Romans 12:15)
This is the calling of every Christian.
Faith does this so very well. She is there for people to celebrate their highs. She’s also often the first they call when they’re experiencing their lows.
No one was more excited about my new book, or about my new look when I recently lost 30 pounds, than Faith was. Not to mention, she gives the best hugs of anyone I know.
3. Point them to Jesus.
Every time I spend time with Faith I can’t help but feel closer to Jesus.
Her spirit is refreshing. Her wisdom is always growing. And her passion for Christ shines through everything she says and does.
Faith’s Christlike life and character consistently point me to Jesus and encourage me to love him more. I hope people at times feel the same way around me.
If you have four minutes and you’d like to take a listen, here’s an encouraging message my daughter sent to me recently. I think it’ll bless your heart like it did mine…
So… who’s your chief encourager?
Better yet… whose chief encourager are you?
