Life is messy and filled with mess-ups (just ask Notre Dame fans from this past weekend). At least mine is.
I was sitting at the kitchen table this past week when I heard a loud pop sound. It didn’t sound quite right. Something bad had just happened.
My 14-year-old son is into golfing right now and was super excited to order a nice golf net to practice his golf swing in our backyard. It came within two days (thanks Prime shipping). Shane was trying it out for the first time when I was sitting at the kitchen table. Sure enough, on the first use, the net broke open, and the golf ball went right into the side of our house, taking a nice round chunk out of my siding. Thankfully it missed the window nearby. (We won’t mention the fact that Shane should have been hitting the ball AWAY from the house. Lol.)
I can honestly say, I was less than pleased with the new “update” to our house siding. But thankfully, I didn’t lose my cool too much. It’s just siding, right?
I was in a hurry to get to the church yesterday morning but had forgotten to shave my bald head. So I grabbed a brand new razor knowing that would do the trick quickly and easily. But in my haste, I got a bit carried away with that fresh blade and realized it immediately. I had just shaved a chunk out of my head, and the blood was starting to run down my neck.
5 bandaids later and 25 minutes late to the church, I was able to get it to stop. (No picture needed here 🙂 )

Here’s the reality—life is messy and doesn’t always go as planned. Murphy finds his way into all of our lives, and if things can go wrong, they will.
But it’s not so much about what goes wrong as it is about how you respond to it.
God desires that we as his people learn to master the art of imperfection—that we learn to live in life’s beautiful, and not-so-beautiful, messes and moments.
“Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good.” Genesis 50:20
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.” Romans 8:28
This principle of God using all things, even the bad, for our good, which is found all throughout Scripture, is true in all of life.
LEARN TO EMBRACE YOUR MESS!

- Your kids are going to misbehave… Your response is even more important than their misbehavior.
- Your life is not going to go as planned this week… Your attitude will determine your outcome.
- Your relationships are going to let you down in some way… Your perspective is going to shape the posture of your heart for either good or bad.
When you know and believe that God is orchestrating your story, it becomes the lens and filter through which you can begin to see all of life.
Why don’t you determine right now, whatever happens, today, tomorrow, or this week, “With God’s help, I’m going to embrace my messy life, because God is working through it, and it’s the only one I get.”
