Do things in your life ever go wrong, and you just don’t have the ability to personally fix them?
I’m the kind of guy who likes to get things done. You know, a checklist guy… so what gets put on the list eventually gets done. I enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing and checking off tasks. But I equally dislike it when things go wrong and as much as I want to fix or finish something, it’s completely out of my control.
We are very blessed…
Our family is blessed to live in the country with a nicely landscaped 2.5-acre yard, and recently, the engines blew out on both of my zero turn lawn mowers back to back. The good news was that the church has a mower that I thought I’d be able to borrow as a backup… but the engine went out on it the same week as well. So, not cool for a guy who takes pride in mowing his grass. 🙂
In addition, things just seemed to be going wrong in a lot of little areas at our home… a sewer line backup in the basement, which led to some walls having to be removed, an alternator that went bad while we were out of state, a broken garage door, a failing faucet, and a list of other small “grievances” in my life.
Am I complaining enough yet?…
I don’t know about you, but what I’ve found is that if I’m not careful, I will focus all my attention on little (or big) things that aren’t right, while missing all the things that are. While I like my life to be clean, orderly, and tidy with every detail working as it should, I’m learning that my life doesn’t have to all be “right” in order for me to enjoy it or embrace it. Because let’s be honest, life will never all be “right”.
If I’m waiting for the moment when nothing is broken, the house is always clean, there are no inconveniences, and everything, including life, works just like it should, then I’m going to be spending the rest of my life… waiting.
But wait… there’s more
Life is not perfect, nor is it meant to be. We live in a fallen world – a world cursed by sin with death and decay. So it should come as no surprise when life and all of its details aren’t perfect. Because even as much as I want it to be, this life is not meant to be perfect.
However, the good news is that we can learn to be constantly living in the moment regardless of our circumstances.
- It is possible to enjoy the days of life despite the weeks of imperfection.
- It is possible to be thankful for all the good despite still having to deal with all the bad.
- It is possible to take on a positive approach despite sometimes negative circumstances.
When I stop to really think about it in perspective, Life Is So Good!:
-
My family loves me.
-
Some friends were willing to loan me a mower.
-
I get to hug my wife and kids every day.
-
My wife still makes me bacon in the mornings. 🙂
-
God has saved me and given me a purpose for living, etc. etc. etc.
This life is not perfect, but thank God it’s good. And it’s good because God is. (Lamentations 2:22-23)
What things in your life right now are a little out of whack, or maybe, out of your control? Are you willing to let God help you learn to embrace your present despite it not being perfect? It really is the best way to live.
Psalm 18:30 As for God, his way is perfect… he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.
Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Is there some way that I can pray for you today? I’d be glad to, just let me know.
