What’s the Big Deal about Worldview? – Part 2

We’re living in a sexual and moral revolution that is taking place right before our eyes, as efforts are being made to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. And one of the greatest arguments made for it’s necessity is that we as a people and a nation must get on “the right side of history.”

Right Side of History

What exactly is “THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY”?

Albert Mohler in his news podcast, The Briefing, illustrated it this way (in my own words)… Of course, who wouldn’t want to be on “the right side of history”? Sounds like a valid argument, right? We all want our children and grandchildren to one day look back on us as having done what was morally right and just in the big picture of things. We want them to see us as having been on “the right side of history”.

  • Hollywood has obviously jumped onto “the right side of history.”
  • Our President has evolved onto “the right side of history.”
  • Many states have boarded the train going to “the right side of history.”

But, I guess all of that would beg us to honestly ask the question, “What exactly is ‘the right side of history’?”

Albert Mohler then rightly concluded, and I quote – “Virtually anyone who’s taken any position on a controversial issue at any time in history has believed that in so doing, he or she was on the right side of history. No one intentionally takes a position that we expect to be revealed as wrong either in short order or in the long run.”

As Christians, our greatest moral responsibility is to be found on “the right side of the Bible”, which also happens to be on the right side of history.

Rather than us looking ahead to the unknown and unproven future and trying to interpret what will happen in order to get on “the right side of history”, why shouldn’t we be looking back to the known and proven past of what has served us well as a solid cornerstone of the family and the society for generation after generation?

What about DISCRIMINATION?

Opponents of traditional marriage state that laws limiting marriage to one man and one woman are discriminatory. But isn’t that what laws have always been for – to set moral boundaries? You can’t have any laws at all if they don’t ‘discriminate’ against someone.

Laws against murder are ‘discriminatory’ against murderers, and laws limiting theft are ‘discriminatory’ against thieves, because those people’s actions are contrary to the very essence and definitions of those laws.

Marriage has been defined for centuries as the union of a man and a woman, thus many now find the “need” to redefine marriage as something other than what it has always been in order to accommodate those whose actions are contrary to it’s definition. Laws serve a much greater purpose than just setting restrictions, they serve as boundaries of moral protection for the well being of society at large.

Didn’t Jesus say to LOVE EVERYONE?

I have people whom I call friends who are homosexuals and lesbians, as well as others who are thieves, adulterers, and even a few who are convicted murderers. Yet, while I consider them to be my friends, they understand that I in no way condone their wrong actions and behaviors, yet I still treat them with love and respect.

Here’s an often misunderstood principle…  We can be both Christian, holding to Biblical standards, while at the same time being a “friend of sinners”, as Jesus was, without compromising our integrity.  Jesus was regularly found with people whom he loved, yet didn’t agree with, yet it never hindered Him from spreading His message of repentance or completing His mission of salvation.  He unapologetically stood for the truth of Scripture, while at the same time loving sinners and calling them to repent.

The fact that I am a friend to someone does not necessitate that I must condone their lifestyle.  There is no contradiction.

Let’s keep THE END in mind…

However, it’s obvious to anyone who wants to think logically that the end of the national issue at hand will not just be same sex marriage, but an overall sexual revolution to the point where no distinction is made about who or what sex can be defined as.

Whether it be the issue of abortion or homosexuality, many of the major shifts in American history haven’t truly been about anything other than a push for complete sexual freedom without restraint, and the desire for our government to put it’s stamp of approval upon it in all it’s forms.

At the end of the day, for most people it’s not really about being on “the right side of history”, it’s really all about sexual freedom, without any Biblical or moral restrictions, and it will only lead to future expansions of what is socially and legally acceptable.

Many people today are willing to just “throw out the baby with the bath water” when it comes to the issue of marriage. It’s not hard to see that their efforts will not simply change the definition of marriage, but will in the end ultimately neutralize marriage as becoming irrelevant altogether.

Why are we so quick to dismiss what THE BIBLE has to say?

Biblically speaking, there’s no question as to where God stands on the issue of marriage…

Genesis 1:27-29  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply…

Genesis 2:24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Hebrews 13:4  Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled, but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Romans 1:26  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and… God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.

The right side of history according to the Bible is the side of truth and morality. The precedent for the fact that marriage works has already been set for the past 6,000 years since Adam and Eve.

Who are we to think that we can redefine what God Himself defined from the beginning?

It’s not ours, but OUR CHILDREN’S WORLDVIEW that must stand the test.

May we always teach our children what the Bible teaches and what history itself has taught us – that marriage works, has always worked, and will continue to work as a cornerstone of society when we recognize it for what it is – one man and one woman for a lifetime.

Considering the current state of affairs, if you haven’t recently, maybe now would be a good time to sit down as a family and review these principles to help our kids get on the right side of the right side of history:

  1. God created marriage, defined marriage, and blesses Biblical marriage.
  2. Marriage is one of the three foundational cornerstones of society – the home, the church, and the government, each ordained by God.
  3. Man can redefine and even legalize something, but that never changes the truth of what God has said.   Romans. 3:4  “Let God be true, but every man a liar.”
  4. We can love and respect people with whom we disagree without compromising or apologizing for what we believe or what the Bible teaches.

Whether we like to admit it or not, it’s not really us, but our children, whose feet will be held to the fire on this issue in the future. As it appears, things will not get better with time, and our children will have to display an even stronger moral conviction and boldness in the next generation than we have in ours. How are they going to do that if we don’t prepare them?

If we don’t equip them with the scriptural knowledge and convictions to take a firm stand on the principles of the Bible when it comes to marriage, we might as well just throw in the towel now. But we just can’t afford to do that!

In an anti-Biblical, anti-Christian society, may we always be conscious to help our children identify and avoid the wrong side of “the right side of history”, and help them to get on the right side of history according to the only source that matters – God and the Bible.
