Your child’s future mate matters more than you know and praying for them now is hugely important.

Many parents and spiritual leaders have differing opinions about what is the best way for a young person to find the right mate. Some say that dating is for mating, others contend that courting is more biblical.

But, whichever option you decide is right for your family, there’s something even more crucially important than choosing the right process, and that is marrying the right person.

And one of the best ways to ensure that happens in the life of your child is not to wait until they are of dating age before you start giving the issue any serious thought or prayer.

“Your child’s future life’s mate is something that you should be thinking and praying about long before they ever do.”

We have always told our children that the two most important decisions they will ever make in life are:
  1. The decision to trust Christ as their Savior.
  2. The decision of who they will marry.

Consequently, those are also two of the main things that every parent should be praying for in their child’s life from the very day of his or her birth.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you pray for your child’s future mate:

1.  Pray for their future mate’s Salvation.

The Bible is very clear that we are not to be unequally yoked together with unbelievers . This especially applies to marriage.

In addition to praying for your child’s salvation, pray as well for the salvation of their future spouse.

Nothing can bring more heartache to a parent than seeing their child marry the wrong person. According to 2 Corinthians 6:14, an unbeliever will always be the wrong person.

2.  Pray for their future mate’s Spiritual Walk.

Just because someone is a professing Christian certainly should not make them a qualified candidate to marry your son or daughter.

Personal character and godliness are essential. So why not add those qualities to your list of things you pray for in a future mate for your child?

  • Pray for them to be growing in grace.
  • Pray for their parents to be raising them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
  • Pray for protection against Satan and temptation so that they will be able to stand pure at the wedding altar with your child who has prayerfully done the same.

3.  Pray for their future mate’s Spouse.

This would be your child. Everything that you would pray to have in a future spouse for your son or daughter, you ought likewise to be both praying for and investing into your own child.

Our sons and daughters will one day be someone else’s husbands and wives. The character and godly qualities that we instill within them today are a gift that keeps on giving.

They are not for our benefit, and they’re not even solely for the benefit of their future spouse, but for the benefit of many future generations to come.

If you haven’t already, add this to your regular prayer list. Start praying now for the person who will one day hold your child’s heart. Years from now you’ll be glad you did.
